Harvesting the Heart Harvesting the Heart by Jodi Picoult

My review

rating: 2 of 5 stars
Harvesting the Heart is a character study of a woman who struggles with marriage and motherhood after a difficult childhood and adolescence. Jodi Picoult attempts to tell a story of redemption and salvation through marriage as the central character finds her way to happiness and contentment.

While the characters are endearing, the story is flat and predictable lacking the depth of plot Jodi Picoult offers in her later novels.

The School of Essential Ingredients The School of Essential Ingredients by Erica Bauermeister

My review

rating: 5 of 5 stars
I was so impressed by The School of Essential Ingredients. Erica Bauermeister shows equal passion for the English language and food by painting beautiful pictures of food through creative and engaging language. The School of Essential Ingredients is a collection of short stories weaved around a Monday night cooking class. Each story focuses on a cooking class student and their life delving deep into their past or present situation. Erica Bauermeister manages to evoke a wide range of emotions. The students find they learn some of life's most important messages through the medium of food. The School of Essential Ingredients is delightfully charming even through stories of heartbreak.
